CHINA SHOWS OFF TINY MOSQUITO DRONE FOR STEALTH MISSIONS

China's National University of Defense Technology has developed a drone the size of a mosquito, designed for covert military operations.

A BARELY VISIBLE SPY

The microdrone, showcased on state television, mimics an insect with a stick-shaped body, two leaf-like wings that flap like a bug's, and three hair-thin legs for perching or landing. Barely bigger than a fingernail, it’s built to slip into tight spaces, gather intelligence, or monitor targets without being noticed, making it a new tool for battlefield reconnaissance.

The drone’s small size is its biggest asset. It can blend into urban settings or dense environments, dodging detection where larger drones would stand out. Controlled by a smartphone or small device, it's easy to deploy, letting soldiers or operatives send it into areas too risky for humans or bigger machines. The design draws on nature, using bionic engineering to mimic a mosquito’s flight, which helps it move quietly and avoid security systems.

Details on the drone’s tech are sparse, but it packs tiny cameras, microphones, or sensors into its coin-sized frame. These let it capture images, audio, or electronic signals, ideal for spying in sensitive spots like government buildings or military sites. The challenge of cramming power, control circuits, and sensors into such a small package shows China's growing skill in micro-robotics, a field where every millimeter counts.
