APPLE'S SHIFT TO ESIM-ONLY DEVICES ACCELERATES GLOBAL TREND IN MOBILE CONNECTIVITY
AppleMagazine
|September 12, 2025
Apple's decision to make its flagship iPhones eSIM-only in key markets is rippling across the mobile industry, accelerating a shift away from physical SIM cards and pushing carriers worldwide to adapt faster than expected.
-
What began with the iPhone 14 in the United States—the first major smartphone lineup to eliminate the SIM tray—has now expanded into other regions with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, and analysts expect the iPhone 17 to further entrench the standard.
WHAT AN ESIM IS—AND WHY APPLE CARES
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional SIM card, built directly into a device's hardware. Instead of inserting a physical card, users activate service by scanning a QR code or downloading carrier credentials. This enables faster setup, easier switching between carriers, and the ability to store multiple numbers on a single device.
For Apple, moving to eSIM-only devices reduces design complexity, frees up valuable internal space, and aligns with the company's environmental goals by eliminating millions of small plastic cards each year. It also strengthens Apple's ability to integrate iPhones more tightly with digital-first services like Apple Pay, Apple Wallet, and Apple Intelligence features tied to user identity.
