Munga extends deal with Saints

CHUNYA Munga had no hesitation in signing a new contract to remain at Northampton for another two seasons even though he has had to be patient since his move from London Irish two years ago.

The 24-year-old second row, who was called up by England in 2021 having been capped at Under-20 level, has started only a couple of Premiership matches since the turn of the year, but he came off the bench for the Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster.

It was a similar story last season when all his starts came in the first half of a campaign that ended with the Premiership trophy being hoisted at Twickenham.

"I have absolutely loved the season," said Munga. "I played more at the start of it and had to fight my way back in after an injury. I have had to learn a bit more about how I play my own game to add value.

"Last season was difficult on a personal level, but when you get to knock-out games and a final and a trophy is lifted that honesty flushes out of you because you see the joy of so many people. Sport is so much bigger than just a game. When you get to the bus parade you see how important it is to the team and how much it lifted the town.

"A young lad named Charlie Hughes was a big emotional driver for us. He passed away recently (after a long battle with illness) and I can still see his face as he held the trophy. That will stay with me for ever."
