ON OCTOBER 28, category 5 hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica with maximum sustained wind speeds of 298 km per hour (kmph), making it one of the strongest hurricanes in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The hurricane exposed 2.8 million people in Jamaica to strong winds, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), an international agency. It also hit Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Overall, the hurricane has claimed over 50 lives and displaced more than 1 million people across the Caribbean, says PAHO.
