For anyone who’s wondered for months how this brick-powered kart racer would play, the answer is a little disappointing: it’s a by-the-numbers, open world racing game. Automatic vehicle switching between car, boat, and off-road forms is neat, and races, challenges, and collectibles are wrapped up in a child-friendly but appealing Lego world. However, beneath the jokes about ‘Big Buttes’ lie deceptively great arcade racing events, all bolstered by a rather exceptional creative twist.
Recent Lego games have rewarded destruction without letting you do any meaningful building, but that’s not the case here: you can build your own vehicles from the wheels up, brick by virtual brick. You can even take them online, though they need to be verified first, which is a welcome touch.
