Just close your eyes for a moment and picture this. Hundreds of small flying machines, no bigger than a kitchen pressure cooker, lifting off together from a dusty field somewhere in India. They spread out in the sky like a flock of sparrows in the evening. They talk to each other, share what their cameras see, and move as one big team. Alone, each one is small and weak. But together? As China's Type 15 tanks mass on Himalayan ridgelines and the ghost of Ukraine haunts every defence ministry in the world, India is attempting one of the most audacious armoured transformations in military history — replacing the Cold War's iron sledgehammer with a digital battlefield motherboard, and handing the job to its own private industry.

In a marshalling yard on the outskirts of Avadi, Tamil Nadu, a T-72 Ajeya sits with its turret removed. Its Soviet-era entrails — hydraulic lines thick as a man's wrist, wiring looms designed in Moscow half a century ago — lie exposed under fluorescent light. Engineers circle it with tablets and clipboards, occasionally peering into the open hull the way a cardiologist studies a difficult chest X-ray: with professional calm, and an acute awareness that the patient cannot be allowed to die on the table.

This scene, replicated across depots from Jabalpur to Hyderabad, is the unglamorous front face of the most consequential military modernisation programme in independent India's history. The Indian Army's armoured corps is living through what defence planners in South Block call the "interregnum" — the dangerous gap between a fleet of ageing Soviet platforms and a vision of warfare so different from the one those platforms were built for that the very concept of the tank must be reconceived from the ground up.
