The system is a next generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system. During the test flight, full range capability of the missile was successfully demonstrated. The weapon has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo.

DRDO recently completed back-toback trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) missile. The tests should go for a few more months before they commence user trials by the end of this year. Many defence experts have questioned VSHORAD's size and the convenience of portability. VSHORAD is a 20 kg missile with a 25 kg tripod stand and a 20-25 kg NG sight. This configuration makes it a whopping 65-70 kg weapon system, requiring a two-person crew for transportation and firing.
