INDIA'S EXPANSIVE RAFALE PLAN

February 2026

Tata Advanced Systems has entered into a collaborative partnership with the Indian Army to undertake a pilot overhaul and upgradation of select Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and associated Battery Command Posts (BCPs), marking a significant step in public-private cooperation for sustaining frontline artillery assets.

INDIA'S EXPANSIVE RAFALE PLAN

India is preparing to examine one of its most consequential fighter aircraft acquisitions in recent years, with the Ministry of Defence expected to advance discussions on a proposal to procure 114 additional Rafale combat aircraft. Estimated at around Rs 3.25 lakh crore, the plan is being positioned as a central pillar of the Indian Air Force's long-term effort to replenish squadron strength and sustain credible deterrence amid an evolving regional security environment.

Momentum around the proposal is likely to build ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to New Delhi in the third week of February, where defence cooperation is expected to feature prominently.

The proposed fleet structure is designed for operational flexibility. The Air Force has outlined a mix of 88 single-seat fighters and 26 twin-seat variants. The single-seat aircraft would form the core of frontline combat squadrons, while the twin-seat configuration would support advanced mission profiles, training conversion, and complex strike operations. The objective is to meet the longstanding requirement for 4.5 generation plus multirole fighters capable of bridging capability gaps as legacy fleets are gradually phased out.

The acquisition has already cleared an initial procedural step after receiving approval from the Defence Procurement Board. It is now set to be examined at a higher level within the ministry, where operational urgency, industrial participation and financial structuring will be key areas of debate. Media reports stated that officials familiar with the discussions described the proposal as strategically significant in light of current security dynamics, particularly as the Air Force seeks to arrest the depletion of squadron numbers.
