India's Agni-5 missile represents a critical development in the country's strategic defence capabilities, as it is a direct response to the complex security environment India is currently facing and reflects significant advancements in missile technology

A MISSILE WITH A MESSAGE

In August 2025, the successful test of Agni-5, a three-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile with a range of over 5,000 kilometres that is capable of reaching most of Asia and beyond, occurred in a regional security environment that was highly intensive, characterised by complex dynamics that involved India's immediate neighbours and broader geopolitical currents.

Strategic Necessity in India's Security Environment

India's geopolitical realities are determined by its historical contentious relations with two nuclear-armed neighbours, China and Pakistan. China's assertive posture in border regions and the ongoing development and modernisation of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, in conjunction with China's expanding military capabilities, have resulted in a persistent state of strategic alertness in India.

Agni-5 is a critical component of India's nuclear triad, which also includes air- and sea-based deterrents, and it enhances the country's land-based nuclear deterrent. India can maintain a stable defence strategy and effectively respond to an assault with nuclear weapons if it is attacked first, due to its long-range and MIRV capabilities.

All of these capabilities serve to bolster India's nuclear doctrine of "No First Use." The sophisticated technology of Agni-5 guarantees that India can respond forcefully in the event of an attack, rather than relying on the threat of using nuclear weapons first. This makes India's commitment to retaliate credible.
