Capturing the Essence of Nature in a Photobook

|February 2025
Ashok Kandimalla, a passionate photographer and an engineer, captures Kenya's landscapes and wildlife in his photobook, Postcards from Kenya. By carefully selecting images and telling a compelling story, Ashok emphasizes the enduring value of print over digital formats. This project marks the beginning of his journey in photobooks.
Photography has always been more than a mere hobby for me; it has been a passion that has shaped my life in profound ways. As an electronics engineer from IIT Madras, my career initially revolved around the computer industry, but my heart was always drawn to the art and science of photography. Over the years, I have transitioned from film to digital photography, acquiring extensive experience in both mediums. Sharing this knowledge through teaching and writing has been equally rewarding. With over 200 published articles and equipment reviews in leading photographic magazines, as well as a longstanding series titled "Basics of Photography" in this magazine (Smart Photography), I have cherished every opportunity to contribute to this field. I have also had the privilege of conducting over 100 workshops and courses for corporate clients and being featured on the Nikon Japan Centenary website-an honour that still humbles me. In 2024, I embarked on a project close to my heart: creating a photobook titled Postcards from Kenya. It was the culmination of a memorable journey and countless hours of dedication.
Capturing Kenya's
Spirit My photobook, Postcards from Kenya, documents a tenday adventure through Kenya's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant wildlife. Armed with two Nikon Z mirrorless cameras a super telephoto zoom and a midrange zoom-I captured approximately 10,000 images during my trip. Selecting just 100 for the book was no easy task. Each image was carefully chosen based on its quality and the memories it evoked.
