1 'Gold Hill' by Andy Dow “I took this photograph of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, in late summer. It took a while to get the lighting right due to the patchy clouds and even longer to get the right subjects in the foreground. Suddenly, these two children wandered up the hill and created the perfect scene. The only editing I did was to stack a couple of shots in Photoshop and delete the rest of the family from the top layer.”

Camera: Canon EOS R6 and RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM lens at 45mm

Settings: 1/400 sec at f/9, ISO 100

Instagram: @adpy.co.uk

Digital Camera says: It's difficult enough to come up with something new for an iconic location such as Gold Hill, let alone waiting for it to be free from tourists. This shot has marvellous tones across the frame and removing the adults from the scene has given it a timeless quality.

image2 'Child and Ladder' by lan Philips

“This shot is of my two-year-old grandson, who was desperate to play with the paint after the shoot. I used a simple, one-light setup with a Godox AD400 Pro, a gridded softbox and a Sony A7 IV.” Camera: Sony A7 IV and 24-70mm Sigma F2.8 DG DN Art lens. Settings: 1/250 sec at f/5.6, ISO 50 Instagram: @ianphillipsphoto

Digital Camera says: There's a superb use of just one light and an inspired idea to give your grandson the tools of the painting trade and place him on the ladder. The colour palette is full of lovely muted tones, while the angle of the ladder adds depth to the frame. The composition places the child so that his body is facing into the scene, but also ensures that his face is making eye contact with the camera.
