Rotten donations thrown away daily across the UK

Food banks are being forced to throw away tonnes of expired and damaged food items donated by supermarkets, according to research.

A report published in March by environmental charity Foodrise revealed that 91 per cent of food aid workers have had to discard unusable supermarket donations, with most saying the food was either inedible or nutritionally poor. The problem is widespread and growing, with smaller charities bearing the brunt.

Last year, food bank staff say their efforts are being undermined by a supply of goods that are often more waste than resource.
