Westcountry protesters among arrests in capital

AT least six people from Cornwall were among over 500 arrested in central London on Saturday with many more from the Duchy taking part in a silent sit-in in support of Palestine Action.

It was the biggest protest since the Government proscribed the 'direct action' group in July under the Terrorism Act, making membership of or support for it a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

One group from Cornwall included ten 'sitters, who quietly showed their support for Palestine Action and risked arrest, with five more providing help and support to those who were arrested and taken to London police stations. Six members of the group were arrested, but there could be more among other Cornish collectives. They have not yet been charged with any offence under the Terrorism Act.
