Celebrated Lowry art and other fine pieces

LAY'S Auctioneers next Cornish Art and Fine Sale on September 11 and 12 has some stunning paintings and sculpture plus an exemplary Studio Pottery section, but this sale also boasts a very interesting selection of prints.

The star lot of the sale is a limited edition print of LS Lowry's celebrated oil on canvas Going to the Match. The 1953 masterpiece captures the essence of English football culture yet focuses on the spectators and fans rather than the game itself.

Although a lifelong Manchester City supporter, Going to the Match depicts a crowd of spectators streaming towards Burnden Park, the former site of Bolton Wanderers Football Club, which was close to Lowry's home.
