School meals bid the tip of obesity iceberg

THERE is no doubt that obesity is one of the most significant public health challenges facing the world.

Obesity brings with it the risk of a wide range of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.
It impacts so many areas of people’s lives, not just physical health but mental health.
In Wales, 62% of people aged 16 and over are overweight or obese. Rates are rising among children.
In 2023, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales reported that nearly one in three children were overweight or obese by the time they started primary school.
The rates are higher in the most disadvantaged communities. Rates of overweight and obesity range from 52% in Powys to 78% in Blaenau Gwent.
