Parc staff took six minutes to find defib

PRISON officers took six minutes to find a defibrillator for a murderer who had suffered a heart attack.

David Maggs, 73, was found unresponsive in his cell bed while serving a life sentence at Bridgend’s Parc prison for stabbing his wife Linda to death at their home in Pontypool.

Prisons ombudsman Adrian Usher said the case showed the importance of all prison staff knowing the location of emergency equipment.

He wrote in his report: “It took staff six minutes to locate the defibrillator when Mr Maggs was unresponsive, despite it being on the same wing”

Maggs’ death on May 7 last year prompted a review by a clinician, who made recommendations for improvements but said these “would not have affected the outcome for Mr Maggs”.
