Deaths link to six-day cold snap

MORE than 2,500 deaths were linked to cold weather last winter, experts have said.

Most of the deaths were linked to a six-day cold snap in January 2025, according to a new UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) report.

It comes as many parts of the UK have been issued weather warnings about rain, snow and ice.

The report, which focuses on the 2024/25 winter, examined data on three cold episodes where the temperature across England was below 2C.

It examines three cold episodes the first a two-day cold snap on November 20-21, 2024; the second a two-day period on January 2-3, 2025, and the third lasted six days from January 7-12, 2025 during this final cold snap there was an amber cold health alert in place across the whole of England.
