WELLS Cathedral's famed Grand Organ is set to fall silent in the new year as an ambitious £3 million refurbishment project begins to save the instrument from potential failure.

- LEWIS CLARKE

Following a surge in mechanical faults, every one of the organ's 5,000 pipes will be removed from January for cleaning, repair or replacement.

The project will also upgrade its console, pedals and stops, improving its performance across a wider range of services including civic ceremonies, carol singing and Evensong.

Andrew Scott, managing director at Harrison & Harrison, the specialist restorers commissioned for the project, said: "We are delighted to be entrusted with rebuilding the organ at Wells Cathedral, an instrument with a rich and distinguished history.
