FORMER Wales international defender Rob Edwards has returned to Cheltenham Town as assistant to new boss Steve Cotterill

- writes Jon Palmer.

Cotterill brings Edwards back as his assistant boss

The 52-year-old earned four caps for his country and represented Carlisle United, Bristol City, Preston North End, Blackpool and Exeter City during a playing career spanning more than 550 appearances.

Edwards, inset, was part of the Bristol City team that won promotion to the second tier under John Ward in 1997/98.

Later, as player-coach at Exeter, he scored the winning goal at Wembley in 2008 as the Grecians secured promotion from the Conference via the playoffs.

He helped Exeter claim a second successive promotion under Paul Tisdale before retiring in 2011 and remaining on the backroom staff until 2014.
