Japanese golfer shoots a 62 to overtake Cantlay at Genesis, Hadwin ties for fourth
Canada’s Adam Hadwin shot a 6-under 65 Sunday to finish fourth at The Genesis Invitational.
Adam Hadwin got off to as good a start as anyone in the final round of The Genesis Invitational. But Hideki Matsuyama’s record effort Sunday at Riviera Country Club was enough knock Hadwin and everyone else out of the running.
Matsuyama won for the ninth time on the PGA Tour after a 9under 62, one shot off the course record at the iconic Los Angeles venue. But it was the lowest closing round by a winner at Riviera, one better than the 63 Doug Tewell shot in 1986.
Matsuyama, the top-ranked Japanese golfer, was six shots back of third-round leader Patrick Cantlay to start the day. His final-round comeback was the largest at Riviera since Mike Weir came from seven shots back in 2003.
Matsuyama finished the four days at 17 under and won by three shots over Luke List and Will Zalatoris. His ninth PGA Tour victory moved him ahead of K.J. Choi of South Korea as the winningest Asianborn player on the circuit.
“Reaching nine wins was one of my big goals, passing K.J. Choi,” Matsuyama said.
