Winsome performances carry The Last Five Years

It is rather cheeky of the Singapore Repertory Theatre to programme The Last Five Years for Valentine's Day.

Composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown's award-winning musical is really an anti-love story centring on the implosion of a marriage.
Instead of the usual romantic-comedy meet-cute, the musical opens with struggling actress Cathy (Inch Chua) tinkling a melancholic waltz-time melody on the piano that leads into the lament, Still Hurting.
This ballad mapping the emotional fallout of a divorce is immediately followed by successful novelist Jamie (Nathan Hartono) singing the humorous Shiksa Goddess, an exuberant declaration of love at the beginning of their relationship.
This clever structuring means Cathy and Jamie's narratives present the relationship in opposing trajectories - Cathy looking back while Jamie looks forward - and for a love story, there is actually very little interaction between the two leads.
