WASHINGTON — A powerful US Senate committee approved a military spending bill on July 31 that includes about US$1 billion ($1.3 billion) to support Ukraine, despite President Donald Trump's administration having asked Congress to eliminate such funding in its budget request.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved US$852 billion for the Department of Defense in the fiscal year ending on Sept 30, 2026, which is US$21.7 billion, or 2.6 percent, more than the Republican President requested earlier in 2025.
The committee voted 26-3 to send the spending measure for a vote in the full Senate, with strong support from both Democrats and Mr. Trump's fellow Republicans.
