Students suggest minister texting facility on 1098 helpline

A group of underprivileged school students from Kolkata and nearby areas recommended to the state women and child development and social welfare minister, Dr Shashi Panja, the inclusion of text messaging facility to 1098 helpline number to lodge complaints about violence on children.

The suggestion came during a meeting of the young Kolkatans with the minister and other senior officials of the department yesterday to discuss the issues concerning the underprivileged students. During the interactive session, the children are said to have put forth a set of demands before the minister and officials of the department. The meeting was held as a part of a programme on the theme 'Listen to the Future' facilitated by UNICEF to uphold child rights and commemorate World Children's Day where the students met the minister and talked about government schemes meant for them and put forward demands to safeguard their rights.
