Steeped in history since its inception in 1772 by the British East India Company, Barrackpore Cantonment — the oldest in the country — ushered in its 250th year with an evocative ceremony celebrating heritage and community spirit.
The grand inaugural programme, held at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (Sainik) Auditorium yesterday, brought together senior defence officials, schoolchildren, teachers, and residents of the historic garrison town.
The event was attended by Principal Director, Defence Estates, Eastern Command Sourav Ray; Deputy Director, Defence Estates, S Prabhakaran; DEO, Kolkata Circle, Jaspal Singh; and CEO of the Barrackpore Cantonment Board, Jyoti Kapoor.
“We have celebrated the 250th anniversary of Barrackpore Cantonment with all pride and honour,” Kapoor said, outlining the Board's vision for the months ahead.
