Karnataka HC Urges Govt to Introduce Stringent Law to Check 'Wheelies' on Two-Wheelers

The Karnataka High Court has expressed serious concern over the absence of strict deterrents to prevent dangerous 'wheelies' on two-wheelers—the practice of riding a motorcycle or scooter on its rear wheel in a hazardous display of skill that poses risks to both the rider and other road users.

The Court advised the government to formulate laws specifically aimed at tackling this menace.

The Court made this observation while hearing a bail plea in a case of 'wheeling' dating back to October 2024. In the incident, three individuals on a motorcycle got into an altercation with the police after officers attempted to stop them. The bike skidded, causing the riders to fall, and a physical confrontation with the police ensued.

The accused were denied bail at the magistrate level and subsequently approached the High Court. However, Justice V. Srishananda also refused to grant bail and remarked that the absence of stringent penalties had led to a significant rise in incidents of 'wheeling'.
