In 2014, when PM Narendra Modi came to power, he announced the establishment of a National Sports University (NSU). It was aimed at putting the nation on the fast track to parity with global sports superpowers.
It was meant to be a great leap forward in the field of Olympic sports and games, in addition to hockey, which had plummeted down the ladder.
In recognition of the sporting talents exhibited by the small state of Manipur, Prime Minister Modi also said that the new National Sports Varsity would be located in Manipur, which, despite its small size and population, had produced more than a dozen Olympians.
The location of the site took some time, as the Congress state government then in power dithered over various options. Then, the residents of the village of Koutruk came forward and donated 350 acres of their village land in the foothills of the Imphal Valley, and after Parliament passed the bill for the establishment of the NSU in 2017, construction work began.
