Emfuleni Speaker slammed for RGOO 000 soccer spending
The Star
|March 26, 2025
THE Democratic Alliance (DA) has sharply criticised the Emfuleni Speaker for squandering a staggering half a mil- lion rand on soccer tournaments while vital services continue to crumble.
This follows the DA's questions tabled in the Gauteng Provincial Leg- islature (GPL) to Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Jacob Mamabolo, who revealed that R606 377 was spent on hosting soccer tournaments over the past three years.
Mamabolo stated that the Speaker's Office has spent a total of R606 377 on hosting soccer tournaments over the past three years. Of this amount, R298 377 was spent in 2022, R161 000 in 2023, and R147 000 in 2024. He further revealed that the Speaker's Office received dona- tions, including soccer kits, balls, tro- phies, tracksuits, medals, and certificates, all of which were awarded as prizes to the participating teams.
