Why can ladybirds be seen 'everywhere' in our homes?

FAMILIES have been left puzzled as 'swarms' of ladybirds gather on windows and walls in homes in Stoke-on-Trent.

Sentinel readers have been in touch to say the spotted insects have been invading their home.

One said: "There are loads of ladybirds on my window, my washing and on me.

"I think the feeling of 'it's not summer but it's hot' has sent them loopy."

Another added: "We have had a massive swarm of ladybirds. I had to close all windows and doors."

But experts say there's no need to panic.

The sudden surge in sightings can be explained by ladybirds' annual autumn migration as they seek shelter ahead of the colder months.

Professor Helen Roy at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and University of Exeter said: "Winter is a tough time for ladybirds in Britain, so during the winter months they become dormant.
