Village venue that was near closure undergoes huge transformation

- Yasmin Sarwar

A COUNTRY pub which was close to shutting for good has reopened following a huge transformation.

George Ferguson has taken over The Wheatsheaf, in Onneley, and is giving it a new lease of life.

The 26-year-old, of May Bank, has been in the industry for 10 years, starting at Little Seeds in Stone before moving on to Parogon Pub Group restaurants - including The Orange Tree and The Wayfarer.

He also helped to set up a bar in Shrewsbury and worked as a sales advisor for Carlsberg.

Now he's decided to take on a new venture to develop his expertise. George has retained the staff who were already working at The Wheatsheaf and he's on the lookout for a new general manager. The new menu has been developed by Ethan McCafferty, who has brought Michelin-star experience to the dog-friendly venue.

ARE you familiar with Gertrude Jekyll’s topiary cat? Yes, I know it sounds like a Seventies prog rock album but actually it’s just what its name suggests: a yew hedge trimmed to look like a verdant feline of phenomenal proportions.
