CHEADLE have announced a new captain as they make early plans for the 2026 North Staffs and South Cheshire League season.

- Chris Travers

The Moorlanders have appointed all-rounder Matthew Goodwin as their new skipper, in succession to Andy Coxon.

Goodwin has previous captaincy experience at Cheadle, having led the first team for a couple of seasons before handing over the reins to Coxon.

A Cheadle statement read:

“Cheadle are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Goodwin as first XI captain for the 2026 season.

“Matt had a stellar 2025, scoring 873 runs and taking 36 wickets. He has experience in the role having served as captain in 2021 and 2022 with the first XI winning a trophy in each of those seasons.

“He has worked with our under-19 and under-17 squads recently and has had a positive impact on those players”

Cheadle just missed out on making an instant return to the top division after finishing in third place in Premier B in 2025.

HEM Heath have also been quick to make a captaincy appointment for next summer's action.

Greg Prime has stepped back from the role after eight years.

Prime enjoyed a successful time as Hem Heath skipper, leading them to two Premier titles, as well as the Talbot Cup.
