IMAGINE PIKACHU AND FRIENDS HAVE WANDERED INTO SOUTH PARK...
RETRO VIBE: The game features pixelated graphics, muted colour palettes and tinny, chiptune music
The Edge of Allegoria (PEGI 18) Switch, PC ★★★★
AS I march steadily into middle age, I'm finding more and more that nothing catches my eye faster than a title that reminds me of my gaming youth.
Glorious pixelated graphics, muted colour palettes and tinny, chiptune music combine to give me a warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling.
So I simply couldn’t resist The Edge of Allegoria, with its retro Game Boy looks giving early Pokemon game vibes.
But don’t let this RPG's cute aesthetic fool you. Beneath its 90s retro veneer is a foulmouthed adventure that feels like Pikachu and friends wandered into the adult world of South Park.
The Edge of Allegoria started life as a kickstarter by developer Button Factory Games in 2024, a feat which is even more impressive when you realise Button Factory is actually one man, Canadian Joe Picknell.
First released on PC late last year, this month it makes the leap to Switch, which oddly enough feels quite fitting.
Allegoria is a world of magic and monsters which sees you harvesting the body parts of your enemies for profit - and not a small amount of personal satisfaction.
