AIIMS Bhubaneswar to be accorded Centre of Excellence status for Sickle Cell disease management

AIIMS Bhubaneswar will soon be accorded the status of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the management and research of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), announced Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram during the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day celebration held at the institute on Thursday.
Highlighting the institute's contribution in treating SCD patients across Odisha and neighbouring states, Oram said the CoE status would bolster AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s capacity in advanced research, quality treatment, and disease management. He also reiterated the Government of India's goal to eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047, noting that 5.79 crore individuals have been screened so far, out of which 2.10 lakh have tested positive and 16.38 lakh are carriers.
