CIUDAD DEL VATICAN (AFP)—US President Donald Trump on Monday said he and his wife Melania plan to attend Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday, in what would be Trump's first trip abroad since taking office in January.

"Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. "We look forward to be there!"

Meanwhile, the first images of Pope Francis in his open coffin were published by the Vatican on Tuesday.

The pope was seen during a service Monday evening in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican residence where he lived during his 12-year papacy, and where he died.

Francis was wearing his red papal vestments, a miter on his head and had a rosary between his fingers.
