The outcome of the Australia-Philippines quarterfinal FIBA Asia Cup game in Jeddah last Wednesday could've been worse than the 24-point margin if the Aussies brought in 12 of their 13 top-tier players who saw action in the NBA last season.
Australia's lineup in Jeddah listed four former NBA players, seven with US college creds and eight under 25 with no one 30 or over. That cast stretched Australia's record to 16-0 since joining the FIBA Asia Cup in 2017 and crushed Gilas, 84-60.
The closest any team has come to beating Australia in FIBA Asia Cup history was Lebanon in the 2022 final where the Boomers clinched their second crown, 75-73. In Jeddah, the slimmest margin of victory for Australia so far was 13 in a group phase contest against Lebanon. Australia's other results were a 36-point demolition of Korea, a 28-point thrashing of Qatar and the win over Gilas.
