Banks' Real Estate Exposure Rises in Q2

The banking industry's exposure to the volatile real estate sector climbed to 19.61 percent of total loans in the second quarter, up from 19.41 percent in the first quarter, data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed.

This marked the highest level in three quarters or since the 19.75 percent recorded as of December last year.

The combined loans and investments of banks and trust departments in the property sector expanded by 7.3 percent to P3.39 trillion as of end-June from P3.16 trillion a year earlier.

Broken down, lending to the sector rose by 8.6 percent to P3.03 trillion from P2.79 trillion. Commercial real estate loans increased by 7.5 percent to P1.87 trillion from P1.74 trillion, while residential real estate loans jumped by 11.5 percent to P1.16 trillion from P1.04 trillion.
