CJI bows out of marital rape case hearing

CHIEF Justice D Y Chandrachud, who is set to demit office on November 10, deferred the hearing on a batch of pleas challenging the immunity granted to husbands in cases of marital rape by four weeks on Wednesday.
The cases will now be taken up by a new bench after November 20, as the CJI would have demitted office by then.
CJI Chandrachud said that he will not be able to deliver the verdict if the hearing does not conclude before the top court closes for the Diwali vacation. The other two judges in the bench, alongside the CJI, were Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
During the hearing, lawyers of various petitioners submitted that they would require one day each to argue.
