Inspector Held for Extorting ₹1 Cr From Man Over Tree-Felling

The district crime branch (DCB) police on Thursday night arrested and remanded in judicial custody an inspector attached with the investigative unit for crimes against women (IUCAW), Dharmapuri, on charges of extorting ₹1 crore from a man by threatening to take action against him for felling teak trees on land acquired by the government for the construction of a barrage across River Kollidam.
According to sources, V Ravichandran (68), an auditor from Kumbakonam, sold his parcel of land measuring around 35,000 square feet located at Kulasekaranallur to his relative Venkatesh in 2020.
The water resources department (WRD) subsequently acquired the property for the construction of a barrage across the Kollidam, and a compensation of ₹54 lakh was paid to Venkatesh.
