Councillors Oppose Proposal to Privatize Two Crematoria

The monthly corporation council meeting for May convened on Friday witnessed heated moments as several councillors expressed opposition to a resolution revealing expression of interest by two NGOs recently in taking over the maintenance of the crematoria at Oyamari and Karumandapam in the city.
At the meeting chaired by Mayor Mu Anbalagan, Ward 32 councillor S Suresh, to the resolution tabled on the maintenance of the two crematoria, said, "Electric crematoria have been set up at six locations in the city. While four are managed by private agencies and NGOs charging ₹2,500 per cremation undertaken, the ones at Oyamari and Karumandapam are still run by the corporation. The two NGOs recently expressed interest in taking over the two crematoria but I oppose the proposal."
