WHAT began as maintenance at a Surat jewellery factory ended in an industrial disaster, leaving four people dead and once again exposing the dangerous reality of hazardous cleaning work in Gujarat.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) of Ratih House near Khand Bazar. With the factory closed for the weekly holiday, management allegedly decided to clean a waste-storage tank. Maintenance manager Nileshbhai Vitthalbhai Savaliya and a contractor reportedly engaged three workers Vikas Santosh Sonawane (24), Vijay Bhikhabhai Ahire and Yogesh Nanabhai Jaday, all residents of Amroli-Tadwadi, to carry out the task.
