Khadi symbolizes the need for and importance of indigenous manufactured goods and has come to represent the fabric of India's progress and resilience.

The KVI sector plays a crucial role in the Indian economy by generating employment with minimal per capita investment. It caters to the basic needs of processed goods in rural areas while providing sustainable employment for rural artisans. Approximately five lakh artisans in rural India derive their income from Khadi activity.

This sector significantly contributes to employment generation, income stability, preservation of traditional crafts, and sustainable development through environmentally friendly practices.

A significant initiative in the development of this sector is the Khadi Gramodyog Vikas Yojana (KGVY), a central scheme aimed at supporting Khadi artisans by increasing productivity, improving infrastructure, and boosting sales.
