CZA DIG Seeks Report on Severe Animal Welfare Crisis at Pilikula

Based on the report, further action on the complaint may be decided, says official

AKANKSHA Mahajan, Deputy Inspector General of Forests, Central Zoo Authority, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has sought a report from the authorities of the Pilikula Biological Park, Mangaluru, over allegations of violation of the standard and norms prescribed for the housing and upkeep of the captive animals.

Bhuvan Mangaluru, a Wildlife Conservationist from the city on June 15, had written to the Central Zoo Authority highlighting the gross violation of CZA guidelines and severe animal welfare crisis at Pilikula Biological Park, Mangaluru, seeking immediate intervention.

In the complaint, Bhuvan had claimed that the situation on the ground is grave and alarming, with the safety and welfare of animals being grossly compromised and serious threats posed to public safety.

"The current state of the zoo reflects systemic mismanagement, blatant non-compliance with the Central Zoo Authorities' established norms, and a complete breakdown in emergency preparedness. Immediate intervention from CZA is essential to prevent further loss of animal life and avert a potential public safety disaster," he alleged.
