Aviation ministry's rationale for high Haj airfare ridiculed

THE MINISTRY of Civil Aviation's claim that Kozhikode airport's limitations are the reason for the high Haj airfare, has been disputed as inaccurate. In response to a memorandum submitted by IUML Rajya Sabha member Haris Beeran seeking a fare reduction, the Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary cited these limitations in an official reply. The Ministry attributed the higher airfare to Kozhikode airport's tabletop runway, the ban on widebody aircraft operations, and a lower number of Haj pilgrims using the airport this year. According to government sources, pilgrims flying from Kozhikode airport will have to pay ₹40,000 more than those departing from Kannur and Kochi.
