Heavy rain and strong winds wreaked havoc across Kerala on Saturday, leaving three persons dead, one missing, and widespread damage reported from multiple districts.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @Kochi

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its rain alert to 'red' for Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur districts by evening, signaling extremely heavy rainfall. An 'orange alert' remains in place for nine districts, while a 'yellow alert' is in effect for the remaining three. Air traffic was also hit, with Kochi airport diverting three flights due to low visibility.

In Kannur, two persons died in separate rain-related incidents. Eniyadan Chandran, a 78-year-old man, died after a tree fell on his house when a severe storm hit Kolayad. Anthony, 50, a native of Kanyakumari, died after a fibre boat capsized at the Chootad estuary in Madayi.

In Idukki, Leelavathi, 60, a resident of Thevaram in Tamil Nadu, succumbed to injuries when a tree fell on her while she was working in a plantation in Udumbanchola.

AWESOME TWOSOME IN FEARLESS FILMMAKING

PARNA Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) was a landmark in my formative years as a film buff. I am not sure where I watched it. But what has stayed with me till date are Jennifer Kendal’s eloquent presence as the quiet and secluded Anglo-Indian teacher Violet Stoneham, and Ashok Mehta’s camera that captures the many shades of loss and solitude that imbue the film, and the textures of a fading world it is set in. It was about underscoring the tenuousness of a community as well as the vulnerability of an individual.
