Tales of palmyra palms and Palingrad platoons

D by serene background is a suburb situated southeast of Panampilly Nagar, alongside the emerging locality of Chathanad. Reached by heavy vegetation, it is a city that retains its natural cultural heritage. Panangad was a home primarily to a fishing community. The inhabitants are believed to be primarily land fisherfolk. Their occupations include net-making and coir-making, and a gradual development of commercial activities in the area has been minimal. There is an institution in the area, the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies.

According to Prakash, president of the Panangad Grama Kendram, the geographical location of the land is such that it is surrounded by water on three sides, and the eastern side is bordered by low-lying paddy fields. A dense palmyra forest gives the area its name: 'Panangad'—panakalude kaadu or naadu, meaning 'the forest/land of palmyra'.
