WILDLIFE attacks have led to devastating losses amounting to ₹91.77 crore in Aralam farm in Kannur. Coconut cultivation took the hardest hit, with a staggering 12,497 fruit-bearing coconut trees and 26,077 coconut seedlings destroyed due to repeated intrusions by wild animals, as detailed in a report submitted to the Forest Minister's office.
The scale of the destruction highlights the growing challenges faced by farmers in regions prone to wildlife intrusions, like Aralam. According to data from 2017 to December 2024, wild elephants have caused extensive damage in the area. The report also highlights that 12 people, including farmworkers, lost their lives in elephant attacks within the Aralam rehabilitation region.
