Raita Sena Accuses State of Neglecting HC Directive

RAITA Sena Karnataka has accused the state government of neglecting the direction issued by the Karnataka High Court on opening procurement centres to purchase farm produce directly from the farmer under the Union government's price support scheme.
The angered farmers' body has urged the state government to convene a meeting of officials and farmers' associations immediately to decide on the issue. In case the government fails to call such a meeting within the next 15 days, it plans to file a contempt petition against the government.
The Raita Sena had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) before the High Court seeking to direct the state government to open procurement centres before the beginning of the harvesting season so that distress sales from the farmers could be avoided.
While disposing of the petition on May 28, the court observed, "When agricultural produce is not available for sale at procurement centres, maintaining such centres open would be contrary to reason and logic".
