Growers demand agri crop status for tubers to compensate losses

WITH heavy rainfall affecting tuber cultivation in Uttara Kannada district, the Kunbi community tribe, which grows the tubers, has demanded that it should be classified as an agriculture crop so that the loss can be compensated on par with other agriculture crops.
The Annual Tuber Mela of Joida is scheduled to take place on January 8 but the bad news for tuber lovers is that the incessant rains last year impacted the crop in a big way. Compared to previous years, either the yield has come down or the size of the tuber has shrunk.
