Vijayapura's Grapes, Raisins May Get GI Tag Soon

A team is collecting data from the local growers and digging into historical records to trace origins of grape cultivation

AFTER the Indi Lemon was successful in obtaining a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, it is now the turn of Vijayapura's grapes and raisins to gain this recognition.

A nine-member expert team, led by Dr. B. Fakruddin, Director of Research at the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot, is preparing a detailed proposal for submission to the Chennai-based GI registry.

The team comprises specialists from various fields, including fruit science, economics, marketing, biochemistry, and genetics. "We are preparing a comprehensive document that scientifically and historically establishes how Vijayapura grapes and raisins differ from others," said Dr. Fakruddin.
