The upcoming elections to the major cooperative societies and banks in Belagavi have turned into a high-voltage power struggle, quite literally, as most of the top politicians of Belagavi are getting involved in it seriously.

The politics in Belagavi district has long revolved around cooperative institutions. Now, the upcoming cooperative elections have set the stage for a fierce battle between the political heavyweights here.

On September 27, elections will be held for the board of the Sangam Cooperative Sugar Factory in Hukkeri taluk, followed by the Hukkeri Rural Electric Cooperative Society polls on September 28. The high-stakes contest for control of the Belagavi District Central Cooperative (DCC) Bank will be held on October 19, drawing state-wide attention.
