THE Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear an appeal challenging a Madras High Court order refusing CBI probe into the stampede during the September 27 political rally of actor and TVK chief Vijay in Karur in which 41 people died.

The top court took note of the special leave petition (SLP) filed by Pannerselvam, father of one of the victims, and listed the matter for hearing on October 10 (Friday).

The counsel for the petitioner told the SC bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran that a plea for CBI probe was dismissed by the Madras HC, but the single judge had observed that he was not satisfied with the probe conducted (into the stampede).

In his appeal, Pannerselvam alleged that the state government failed in its duty to properly handle public safety.
